The Robot on my Tummy

The Robot on my Tummy is a children’s book for young kids with Type 1 diabetes, written by Gillian King-Cargile. The goal of the book was not only to destigmatize Type 1 diabetes, but to help frame it in positive language. Hopefully, with this book, young kids with diabetes have a break from some of the somewhat dour tone surrounding chronic health management.

To help convey this positive energy, I wanted to focus on using especially bright colors and bold shapes in this book. I worked 100% traditionally, in gouache and colored pencil, to bring an especially lively and grounded textural sensibility to these pieces. Additionally, I also handled the type design and layout.

This book is published via Poke Prize Press in early 2023.
